MESSAGE FROM BILLY CORGAN REGARDING SMASHINGPUMPKINS.COM

Alerta, SPOILER! de asunto desconocido:
Recently I read a post by another famed alt-rocker from my generation lamenting the negative cultures of the internet...how its inherent narcissism ruins a lot of good fun for everyone because those that shout the loudest and are the most obsessive are able to control a dialogue over things that in the normal discourse of real life wouldn't be that big a deal...I have watched with great interest over the last 15 or so years the rise of the web and how it has given form to new social dynamics and single-handedly helped to blow up the music business that I think I used to belong to...as a interested observer, let me say then that I am fully aware that nothing I say here will change anything as it pertains to any negativity lingering proudly in the human soul, because that is a decision that only comes thru and from the collective; when a majority of us are tired of such constant poison that we'll scream 'enough' at the top of our lungs and the idiots get drowned out by those who have sat silently waiting till they can take it no more...I am more silent these days than not, an ironic fact of which I am criticized by fans for not feeding them with enough vacant info to their liking, but nicely applauded with apathy by those that don't care should I live or die...after all, aren't I a horrible, detestable creature that would dare go his own way in life?...shame on me for not being one of the sheeple!!

I have tried in vain to create a positive, loving website that takes into great effect those that would use it most...I hear quite often not to let the bad apples in this bunch that do visit the site far too often ruin it for the rest of those that aren't so destructive and are capable to see the forest from the trees...the point being 'hey Billy, its just the way of the world, don't be so sensitive'...

That's a similar logic I heard when I first started in music and I was told certain things were not possible with my band or my tunes...my point to you is just because everyone accepts something dumb doesn't make it good or whole or essential...in essence their point is, yes, the website is a reflection on the larger culture as a whole, and I am powerless to stop it... Todays laughter was me being criticized for a post that had info about a charity that was offering (to the highest bidder) a lunch with me. Unfortunately, unknown to me, the info stated that lunch was on the person who won the auction. Having never offered myself for a charity lunch date before, I was curious to see what fans might say about it. I was surprised to see a minor detail I was unaware of that said the winner must pay the bill at lunch turn into an attack on me and my supposed fortune. What an asshole I am to not want to buy lunch?

I bring this to your attention because this is exactly what's to be expected in a mean and bitter world. Every act, no matter how kind or caring must be viewed thru the dim lens of ambition, greed, power, and ultimately selfishness. There must be an ulterior motive to all of this, right?? A charity lunch just can't be as simple as that. The awareness raised for the charity means nothing against what its going to do for my career...and what a career its been! And thank God someone gets to fit the bill for my meal!

Yes I'm being sarcastic but the sad part is someone out there will read this and think the worst, never seeing the darkness and avarice in their own heart...

I've made a pledge to lead a different kind of business, and it must begin with this website, which stands as the public face of Smashing Pumpkins World Domination Corp.

What do I wish to dominate with? Love and good music...did he just say love and good music? Now I know he's insane...

Love means nothing against someone with something to say.

So I'll get to my point. This website is going to change. It is going to transform into something that is consistent with the concepts of love, grace, and community. We are not looking backwards anymore, only forward. I for one am willing to stand for something good here, in this little corner of the blogosphere, and say it's time.

What makes the things I'm saying here even more real to me is the passing of my dear friend Sky Sunlight Saxon. Sky lived everyday with the concept of LOVE as his guide, and he walked the talk. He was a spiritual warrior who would tell me that Yahowa knew the beauty of our hearts, and that musicians were the living prophets of the world. So in Sky's memory I am going to re-dedicate this website to represent the things he cared about most; love, life, music, his spiritual family, and the protection of all God's creatures, big and small.

It's been a long time coming for me to address the users of SP.com and answer some questions about what exactly is going on, and what to expect.

There have been some immediate and glaring changes made to SmashingPumpkins.com in the past two weeks, most of which involve community features of the site.

First off, we have removed the comments function for news, articles, and blogs. The discussion was often taking a turn for the worst, and the decision was made to remove the feature. For now, consider this a permanent change.

Second, user blogs have also been hidden. These have been removed from the main page of the site and been replaced with Billy's twitter messages. Your blogs have not been deleted, and so there may be a chance for you to gather up your previous blogs for your own safe keeping. There will be a notification when this occurs. After that period, your blogs may be gone for good.

Third, the message board / forum has had some considerable posting modifications put in place. New users can no longer post topics as immediately after joining. A user must reach a post-count of 17 replies before they are able to post new topics and reply in all areas of the forum. Many users have notified me that they are unable to post, but this is not the case. You must first post a total of 17 replies in the general discussion forums before you are granted full access to the features of the forum. This new rule has been put into place to deter spammers and mischief makers from ruining the fun for everyone else that is an active participant in discussions.

Since the comments and other community features have been removed, we encourage discussion to take place solely on the message board to use it as your main outlet for discussion of current SP events.

So why the changes?

The Pumpkins Media Militia staff and I at SmashingPumpkins.com has spent the last two years trying to cultivate a positive atmosphere for SP fans of all ages, dedications, and walks of life. This phase of the experiment that we have all been active participants in is slowly coming to a close. The band's official website is no longer going to represent in any way the negative, destructive culture of the current internet.

This shouldn't be considered a case where "a few bad eggs spoil the bunch," because there are many loving and supporting users of the site out there. It is just time to redirect the energy of the site and its community into something that is a bit more productive than what could be considered a "mini-myspace for Pumpkinheads".

It is in the legacy of this band's history to push boundaries, to refuse to adhere to what the norm is, and to ask more of their fanbase than what most bands ask of their fans. In return, more is asked of the band, Billy, and the site itself. This website must represent the future of the internet and not its recent past. The internet/web has been around long enough now that we all see the patterns, and it's obvious to us that our attempts to break these patterns through good will just isn't enough. So that is the outlook we shall be adhering to once again to forge ahead.

Consider SP.com as it currently stands to be in a proverbial cocoon of sorts. A beautiful metamorphosis is occurring as we speak. The most recent changes that took place on this site were not enough to successfully showcase the full potential of this band's rich history and bright future.

I personally thank everyone for their contributions and support for the past 2 years, it has been an amazing journey. We have hit a few bumps in the road, but just wait until we come over this next ridge, the view will be spectacular.

Alerta, SPOILER! de asunto desconocido:
This is, most likely, still a fairly touchy subject to broach here publicly on the official SP site. In doing so, I respectfully request that you hear me out.

Last March, I was punched in the gut for the second time. The Smashing Pumpkins' management announced that my favorite drummer (and many of yours), Mr. Jimmy Chamberlin, would be leaving the band, again. Like so many of you, I was quite confused by the announcement since I had expected that Billy and Jimmy would always be together, playing music and making our world a better place. I wanted it to be a bad dream. But it wasn't.

We've all heard a number of arguments from friends and enemies of the Mighty SP related to Jimmy's departure. Some (at least initially) felt that with Jimmy leaving, the final straw had been pulled. A few arrogantly declared that the Smashing Pumpkins were dead. A number of members in the music journalism industry echoed this sentiment, some even complaining that it was long overdue. Members of the fan community both here, and commenting on other websites were quick to defend the Smashing Pumpkins from such onslaughts, even at the risk of being labeled an indiscriminate fan boi (or girl). But even they must have felt at least slightly conflicted. I certainly did.

Perhaps the easiest argument to defend Billy's decision to continue as the sole remaining, original Pumpkin was to point out that as the primary songwriter, lyricist, vocalist, and often instrumentalist, Billy Corgan was and always will be the Smashing Pumpkins. But, according to this argument, any others were just along for the ride. Such statements tragically diminish the contributions that Jimmy, James, D'Arcy, Jeff, Ginger and all other musicians who have appeared onstage or on albums under the name The Smashing Pumpkins have made to the music that provided us the reason to care in the first place. Opposing arguments sometimes exaggerate the role other members had in making SP music, despite Billy's clear, legal claim to authorship to the vast majority of the music.

In my last article, I had a conversation with pop-culture scholar, Marlie Centawer, about her ongoing analysis of Billy Corgan and his continuing self-actualization as an artist. During the course of the conversation, the topic of Billy's self-identification with the Smashing Pumpkins came up. I asked for Marlie's opinion on Billy's full-page declaration that he would be reforming the Smashing Pumpkins, even as his first solo album, TheFutureEmbrace, was released. Corgan specifically stated in the ad that he "want(ed) (his) band back, and (his) songs, and (his) dreams." (Emphasis on 'his'—in the original, on 'my.')

Marlie's answer, I think, is very insightful and probably fairly accurate. "Corgan's claim that he "want(ed) his old songs back" really speaks to his self-identification with the band and his role as distinct auteur within the Smashing Pumpkins. I agree that Billy's self-identification with the band is pertinent to his current reworking of the group as a concept, which involves his re-adoption of the Smashing Pumpkins moniker, but with alternate or rotating band members." The idea that the Smashing Pumpkins no longer exist as a band in the commonly understood sense, but rather as a concept, will certainly not sit well with many fans. To their point, there are certainly a number of questions to ask about what this means for Smashing Pumpkins music.

What is in a name? Now that Billy's going it alone (although there are strong contraindications that this will be the case), will the next Smashing Pumpkins album be a sequel to TFE? Or will working under the name that may have originated as a joke, but 'his' joke, allow Billy, as Marlie puts it, a more fulfilling "exploration of the boundaries between revealing and concealing his 'authentic self' as a performer?" (Think Billy's Zero or White Spyder personas, but more completely realized.) The Shakespearean dilemma undergoes a partial inversion, perhaps, in this case. Whereas, for Juliet, Romeo would be no different were he not a Montague, Billy's self-identification with the title/concept, the Smashing Pumpkins, seems almost an appropriation of a not-so-secret identity. (A Guitar-Hero, perhaps?)

To quote Billy's TFE ad: "Many have assumed that the decisions that I have made over the last few years have been to try to get away from something. But what I have been really trying to do is to find that same kid again, the one believed he could change the world with a song. There is an old saying that goes 'you can't go home again,' but I believe that your home is wherever your heart lies." Even here, approximately two years before the Smashing Pumpkins launched their return, Billy is fairly directly branding himself with the Smashing Pumpkins moniker. It is his "home" and "heart."

When we add Billy's declaration from his 27 October 2008 blog that "The Smashing Pumpkins are now whoever is standing on that stage, on any given day, with a willingness to play those songs. Not just any songs, those songs," and the fact that the band lineup has been in a near constant state of flux since 1996, it's obvious that Billy has been in the process of looking at The Smashing Pumpkins more as concept than a band for some time. It's not just any concept, but his concept. And crucial to the concept is that the Smashing Pumpkins (whoever takes the stage) exclusively perform (with the occasional odd cover) Smashing Pumpkins music.

It's reasonable to assume that only music fitting within Billy's concept of the Mighty SP will be released under that name. And yet, the sheer depth of music thus far released under this name leaves the door wide open for what we might expect in the future. It is up to Billy what he releases under the banner of the SP Heart. Those who might not consider what Billy is currently working on to be authentic Smashing Pumpkins overstep their bounds. Billy clearly has a much greater right to decide what is The Smashing Pumpkins than any of us, even if it is just a joke./spoiler]
