Aaah. ^-^

http://media.muselive.com/datas/downloads/SYS/d2d9c8241fe3afd059e32a8f24b5c954/%5BU-16132%5D%5BT-13513%5D%5BP-364357%5Dmuse%20-%20supermassive%20black%20hole%20video.wmv

I feel alright tonight
And everywhere I go is shining bright

Muse: Black Hole or Revelation?
19/05/2006
Muse

We've always known that Muse were good - great, even - but we never realised how good they could be if they really pulled their finger out. When new single 'Supermassive Black Hole' was plopped onto our stereo, some of us didn't have a clue that they were listening to Muse - and still didn't believe after they were told exactly what was going on. The unbelievers!

Anyway, we left them at home in their dark world of disbelief and headed into town the other day to listen to the new Muse album, 'Black Holes and Revelations'. And rather impressed we were too. The words 'better than the Furtado album' were mouthed, and we're standing by them.

We're also standing by the fact that we secretly wanted to take home one of the Sony PSPs which were on every table, and we would have, but for the fact that on every table was a sign asking us not to. Bah. It's probably for the best - we did try them out at one point and all we managed to do was make the Muse UMD play at twice the speed and then go black.

Luckily, we fared better with the headphones; we wore them to the toilet and they worked in there. We wore them to the bar and they worked there too. When we took them off, the whole room was silent and like a spooky episode of Dr Who when something nasty comes and brainwashes people to do evil stuff and Billie gets scared and David Tennant saves everyone with his magic pencil.

Anyway, the album: unbelievable. Not only is this a great big pop album, it may also be the best thing we have heard all year. Here is what you need to know:

It sounds a bit like Madonna! ('Ray of Light', not 'Evita')

It sounds a bit like Britney! ('Do Somethin' not 'Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know')

It sounds a bit like Queen! ('Bohemian Rhapsody' not 'I Want To Ride My Bicycle')

It sounds a bit Mexican! (Latin guitars and horses, not deep fried in cheese)

It also sounds a little bit like Muse. Enough to keep the fans happy, but with enough outside influence to make sure that everyone else is going to be happy too.

The only thing that made us anything other than happy was all the fish being served. It stank.

Review Top of the Pops

Earlier this week we went to a listening party for the new Muse album 'Black Holes And Revelations' - with great big headphones. We liked it a LOT! But that might not be obvious from our notes, which are rubbish...

'Take A Bow'
TOTP 1.1: Queen!
TOTP 1.2: Depeche Mode!
TOTP 1.1: This is what the second Darkness album should have sounded like.
TOTP 1.2: Shh!

'Starlight'
TOTP 1.2: Oooh! Bass!
TOTP 1.1: It's very U2, this one.
TOTP 1.2: Huh! It's gone all Bill & Ted...
TOTP 1.1: Eh?
TOTP 1.2: The bit with Mozart onstage.

'Supermassive Black Hole'
TOTP 1.2: Nnnngh! Yes! Let us rock!
TOTP 1.1: Fizzy synth funk. Mmmm...
TOTP 1.2: Vocoder. Mmmm...
TOTP 1.1: Mmm...

'Map Of The Problematique'
TOTP 1.2: Erm, that sounds like Robert Miles.
TOTP 1.1: *Looks uncertain*
TOTP 1.2: Make some noise, etc.
TOTP 1.1: It's Depeche Modey.

'Soldier's Poem'
TOTP 1.2: Scales practice, anyone?
TOTP 1.1: Who let Queen in?
TOTP 1.2: *Stretches* Is it bedtime already!

'Invincible'
TOTP 1.2: Whalesong orchestra?
TOTP 1.1: Invasion of the military sea monsters?
TOTP 1.2: This one's U2-y as well. In a good way.
TOTP 1.1: Or an underwater Divine Comedy.

'Assassin'
TOTP 1.1: Ow! My ffffff-lipping ears!
TOTP 1.2: Nnnngh!
TOTP 1.2 & 1.1: *Head nodding*

'Exo-politics'
TOTP 1.1: It's the Cyberman Tango!

'City Of Delusion'
TOTP 1.1: It's 'Toxic' meets flamenco!
TOTP 1.2: Ai ai ai! *Motions to passing food lady* Thanks.
TOTP 1.1: It's dripping on your jeans.
TOTP 1.2: Tsk! That's never gonna come out.

'Hoodoo'
TOTP 1.2: Yay! Disco!
TOTP 1.1: Bum!
TOTP 1.2: But when's it gonna rock?

'Knights Of Cydonia'
TOTP 1.1: Hmm... Westerny.
TOTP 1.2: The video for this has got to be set in space. With Mexican bandits.
TOTP 1.1: This is nuts. More, please.
TOTP 1.2: Shall I get the food lady back?

Verdict
Album: 9/10
Food: 7/10
Headphones: 21/10

Muse made a triumphant live comeback at Radio 1’s Big Weekend at (not unsurprisingly) the weekend and played tracks from their feverishly anticipated new album ‘Blackholes and Revelations.’ The playback for the new album took place last night and I was there to hear the songs that fans can expect to hear when Muse make a number of UK Festival appearances this summer – start getting excited now!

TAKE A BOW
Instantly dispelled any doubts that Muse would not be able to sound even bigger within seconds of beginning. An instantly grandiose song, the very definition of epic – like a more intense ‘Butterflies and Hurricanes’ - and arguably the greatest sing the band have ever written.

STARLIGHT
Driven by prominent interlocking bass and piano and giving way to rocky guitars and pounding drums – this songs is in the same mould as ‘Bliss’ and contains the words ‘Blackholes and Revelations’.

SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLE
The single, which you may have heard by now, has surprised many people. It has a very dance-y, sexy feel to it and includes very high pitched vocals (that some people described as sounding a little like the Scissor Sisters.) Very Muse in places, very different in others.

MAP OF THE PROBLEMATIQUE
Fuelled by driving bass and pounding keys contrasted with some moody piano work. Someone sitting near me described it as ‘trance-y’

SOLDIER’S POEM
Another very different song and a stand out track. Opening with brushwork and a gentle vocal, this sounds very like it could be a Rufus Wainwright song. It has a very political slant including the line ‘there’s no justice in the war.’

INVINCIBLE
Marching drums and guitar histrionics open this track, which repeatedly contains the refrain ‘together we are invincible’. This gives way to powerful beats and a high pitched Matt Bellamy solo.

ASSASSIN
Definitely a stand out track. Eastern tinged guitar and frantic rhythms similar to System Of A Down, contains some excellent drum work from Dom Howard. Has an aggression, which befits the song title. Towards the end what sounds like a choir of multi-tracked Bellamy vocals is prominent – a typically unpredictable Muse experience!

EXO – POLITICS
Another stand out track opening with skeletal drumming and dirty guitar – this song has been aired on live shows in the U.S.

CITY OF DELUSION
Sounds like like Muse experimenting with Led Zeppelin’s ‘Kashmir’. The song is book ended by acoustic guitar work and has a very romantic feel to it, even contains a trumpet solo! Like Muse themselves, there are so many amazing ideas happening at once it is hard to keep up!

HOODOO
Another eastern flavoured track that descends into a riff similar to the music from the beginning of Pulp Fiction. Stark romantic vocals (which are very Buckley-esque in places) and strummed guitars lead up to some beautiful piano work and a crashing finale.

KNIGHTS OF CYDONIA
Just as there is an awesome show-stopping track to open the album, there is also one to close the album on an incredible high. A galloping introduction leads into this massive sounding track: it’s like a prog-rock spaghetti western/B-movie soundtrack and has more trumpet work – absolutely amazing!

This is an unbelievable album and with it Muse have done what looked impossible – growing even bigger and better. The band will be playing the Reading and Leeds Festivals – and those seeing them should be prepared to hear some mind-blowing new material.

Ah, mira, "Crying Shame". ^-^
