Oasis - Definitely Maybe DVD

“Everyone’s going to come along and say ‘They did this and they did that’ and most of them will get it wrong because they weren’t even there." Liam Gallagher

"I think a lot of what we’ve achieved has come about because we’ve caught the spirit of what was missing in a lot of people’s lives." Noel Gallagher

Where were you at the start of 1994? For what it’s worth I was in a cramped office at Radio 1, the bunker I used to share with fellow DJ Jo Whiley, blissfully unaware that the band who would touch so many people’s lives in the years to follow were about to come breaking through the door.

This was going to be the year it would all change. You could have fooled us. For the past 12 months we’d been walking through a musical drizzle, the damp air left behind by Madchester and the bitter cold of another shower from Seattle.

Since the excitement and community of Spike Island the Stone Roses had all but vanished, while Grunge Rock’s one true revolutionary band Nirvana were beset by stories of drug addiction and exhaustion. As for the rest of the music scene, OK, there were some good records being made, but there was a nagging, creeping realisation that maybe something was missing. What the fuck was it? I don’t think we had a clue. We could have sat there for days looking for whatever it was we’d lost. But we didn’t even know what we were looking for.

Then just when you needed them, armed only with a demo and the reflected glory of having signed to Creation, they arrived. Mouthy, unpredictable, smart, and wearing bloody duffle coats, the key to the future...OASIS. What had we been missing? Ambition, that’s what. Not naked, demented city-banker ambition, but bold, assured change the world ambition.

Here was a band who simply weren’t content with the trad-rock indie treadmill. They were good and they knew it and wanted everyone else to know it too. It was as easy and obvious as that. Oasis were the antithesis of the old elitist alternative chic, the bedroom angst and the toilet gig ghetto.

"We write music for the guy who walks down the street to get his copy of the Daily Mirror and 20 Bensons and he’s got fuck all going for him" explained Noel. He couldn’t have put it better.

The first set of songs which they arrived with, bubbled with lines which were by degrees insightful, haphazard, often spontaneous and occasionally trippy. But at the centre of them there was a frustration that was incendiary. As the gigs grew bigger, they became a pressure cooker for fans letting off steam, venting the same sense of unfulfilment that mirrored the band’s days being skint and overlooked in a Manchester rehearsal room.

Like many great songwriters Gallagher had - and still has - an uncanny ability to vocalise emotions which the rest of us haven’t even found names for yet. After delivering ‘Columbia’, the demo 12 inch, the band followed with a brace of singles (‘Supersonic’ and ‘Shakermaker’) that propelled them into the Top 40 and into the music press. Each week through the spring of ‘94 the momentum gathered pace. Every week there was a story or a picture which stopped you dead in your tracks. It had started with a showcase at London’s tiny Water Rats venue which produced definitive proof of the band’s star quality. Being a late convert to the cause I missed the date itself - but you didn’t have to be there to be mesmerised by the live shots the following week.

In particular there was a photo of Liam, hanging off his microphone, brooding and leaning into the camera. You might remember it. He looks so astonishingly cool it hurts, but it’s his stare, the way his dark eyes seem to burn through the page that makes the picture. It was the most powerful portrait of a singer since Kurt Cobain’s iconic doe-eyed pin-up.

It seems to me that so much of pop and rock music over the past 10 years has been about styling and marketing. Or if you like, the tarting up or ironing out of bands music and image. But what you saw with Oasis was the proper, unpolished, real deal. They wise-cracked and swaggered through a tight-arsed industry during that spring and no-one was safe from one of their verbal savageries, not even the rest of the band. But capturing their natural sound on record started to prove a problem. They made two attempts at recording their debut album before it finally gelled. With production from long-standing ally Mark Coyle and mixing by the understated Owen Morris, ‘Definitely Maybe’ was released in August ‘94 and became Britain’s fastest selling debut album of all time.

And you don’t need me to remind you of the tracks. But hell’s teeth, listen to that guitar and the sudden, impatient outburst of drums at the start of ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Star’. As statements of intent go, this was in a class of its own. You can point to all sorts of references on ‘Definitely Maybe’ (from the speed of punk to the spliff of pyschedelia), but the fact is that within months of its release it had surpassed its influences. What does ‘Definitely Maybe’ sound like? It was THE sound of 1994 ...still sounding fearless in 2004.

It was parkas, shades, a sense of celebration and endless pounds in the jukebox. The backing for all those top nights out, and all those lost nights in. It was, as Noel said "what was missing in a lot of people’s lives."

[align=center][glow=red]Bring It On Down[/glow]

What was that sound ringing around your brain?
Today was just a blur, you gotta head like a ghost train
What was that sound ringing around your brain?
You're here on your own who you gonna find to blame?

You're the outcast - you're the underclass
But you don't care - because you're living fast

You're the un-invited guest who stays 'till the end
I know you've got a problem that the devil sends
You think they're talking 'bout you but you don't know who
I'll be scraping your life from the soul of my shoe tonight.

Bring it on down. Bring it down for me
Your head's in a fish tank
Your body and your mind can't breath

You're the outcast - you're the underclass
But you don't care - because you're living fast

You're the un-invited guest who stays 'till the end
I know you've got a problem that the devil sends
You think they're talking 'bout you but you don't know who
I'll be scraping your life from the soul of my shoe tonight.
